Metalformers have a big job to do this year: Challenge our government to take specific action to save manufacturing in this country, and in fact, in North America. Each manufacturing job creates more than one-half of another job in nonmanufacturing sectors. Consider that we've lost nearly 3 million U.S. manufacturing jobs in the last three years and it's hard to predict much of a turnaround unless our government, and the governments of Canada and Mexico, step in with new incentives, policies and strategies to ensure that North America maintains its manufacturing strength. At its recent Annual Meeting, Precision Metalforming Association (PMA) members approved a new focus on advocacy, with an agenda that asks our elected leaders to adopt policies to strengthen manufacturing. PMA has hired a lobbying firm to help carry the message, but every metalforming company, every supplier and all of the other manufacturing trade associations must join together to deliver the message to our elected leaders.
