We all know the pitfalls of an active public address (PA) system. You've surely heard the time-worn joke about the long-haul co-pilot who unwittingly told all the passengers on his flight what he was going to do to the little blonde hostie down the back after they had leveled off in the cruise. Long recitations of pre-takeoff checklists have blocked frequencies on every continent when new first officers didn't know which button to press. They are normally followed by ribald prompting from the avionic audience. Calls made on the wrong frequency have provided hours of innocent fun for easily amused pilots, worldwide.
