This paper describes modeling and generation of anisotropic surfaces with the non-causal two-dimensional auto-regressive (2-D AR) model for tribological direct simulations. Two types of anisotropic surfaces, an ordinary ground surface and a crosshatched ground surface measured by a stylus system, are modeled and generated with the non-causal 2-D AR model. The causal 2-D AR model is also applied to make a comparison between the causal model and the non-causal model. The ordinary ground surface is well simulated with both the causal model and the non-causal model about height probability density function, autocorrelation coefficient, summit density, average slope of roughness, etc. But the radius of curvature of the grinding direction showed differences from the measured value. In the case of the crosshatched ground surface, it is shown that only the non-causal model can represent two directional low frequency components.
