Decisions about reservoir operations traditionally have been made using a rule curve. This is an operational guide setting maximum and minimum water levels for certain times of the year. The alternative is a decision support system, which can help reservoir managers better optimize water use. Experiences of five hydro project owners using such systems illustrate the benefits.
