Several lines of evidence support a pro-atherogenic role for oxidized LDL. The most persuasive evidence, however, is that antioxidant feeding can retard the progression of atherosclerosis in animal models. This review focuses on the effect of antioxidants (probucol, a-tocopherol, ascorbate, (i-carotene, ubiquinol-10 and flavonoids) on LDL oxidation and atherosclerosis development.
