Savvy recyclers in the world of plastic scrap have known for years that plastic films are a substantial commodity of their own, representing a larger share of the total plastics waste stream than all rigid containers combined. Businesses have begun to recognize that plastic films are composing a large percentage of their waste stream, and they are exploring options for recycling. Plastic films include everything from common plastic grocery sacks to stretch films and mattress bags. Nearly all goods are packaged in plastic film at some point early in their life cycle. Small boxed goods are wrapped on a pallet, and large products, such as furniture and even cars, come wrapped in plastic. This rapid growth has come about because of increased availability of many types of films that offer strong, light-weight and low-cost packaging options.
