AbstractWhen protein was irradiated by gamma rays from a cobalt 60 sources, an activated state on the position of the groups in the vicinity of the asymmetric carbon atoms in the protein molecule was caused. An empirical equation for the change in optical rotation was obtained, and the phenomena were explained on the basis of the molecular mechanism. The general equation for the change in optical rotation is given by α = (b+alog R) (1 −e−kt), where α is the specific rotation of the solution, R is the gamma radiation dose, tis time, anda,b, andkare adjustable cons
