Soil lateral forces on retaining walls during earthquakes are considered taking into account soil-wall interaction effects. Gravity wall is represented by a discrete element model with no sliding along the base. Flexural wall is represented by coupled single degree of freedom oscillator, SDOFO. The results of simplified models are not validated against unavailable field data but compared with the results of conventional Mononobe-Okabe method for a rigid wedge. For gravity walls, the Monon-obe-Okabe method, which version is given in Eurocode 8, may be unsafe for loose and medium dense sand with SPT (N_1)_(60) less than 25 most probably because of ignored soil-wall interaction effect. For flexural walls, the Mononobe-Okabe method is uneconomical and may significantly over predict, by 50, seismic lateral force most likely because of ignored wall displacements.
