The presence of a potent respiratory chain inhibitor in extracts of white clover (Trifolium repensL.) is reported. Extracts of other pasture species provided lesser degrees of inhibition, with typical grass extracts being least inhibitory. The implication of the possible effect of this inhibition in the aetiology of selenium-responsive white muscle disease in New Zealand is discussed.
