Thanks to the Industrial Revolution, Britain is one of the most urbanised regions in the world; more than 80 per cent of the population live in cities, towns and suburbs. Since the death of the primary extractive and heavy manufacturing industries, people have come to believe that we are no longer so dependent upon geologically based materials derived from the landscape, such as coal, slate and metal ores. Nothing could be further from the truth.
