Drug abuse by parturients has devastating maternal, fetal, and neonatal effects. No completely reliable, sensitive way to detect drug abuse exists. Anesthesiologists need to be suspicious when the results are not consistent with the expected outcome. Maternal drug abuse mimics many conditions; one must therefore be vigilant.
