abstract_textpAn eight year old male Korthals Griffon was presented with a four year history of alopecia, crusting, erythema and pruritus, mainly around the face. Diagnosis was based on histopathological examination of skin biopsies which revealed a periadnexal pyogranulomatous infiltrate associated with folliculitis/furunculosis. Other diagnostic tests (exudative cytology, fungal and bacterial cultures, leishmaniosis serology) revealed no pathogenic organisms. No improvement was seen following either of two courses of an appropriate antibiotic, given at the correct dose and for a suitable duration. The final diagnosis was sterile pyogranuloma/granuloma syndrome. Immunosuppressive doses of prednisolone produced regression of the lesions within one month. However, due to rapid relapse and poor tolerance of the prednisolone, azathioprine was introduced. After a period of combination treatment, the prednisolone was stopped and azathioprine continued as sole therapy. The condition was well controlled on azathioprine alone. Epidemiological, clinical, diagnostic and therapeutic features of this case of sterile pyogranuloma are discussed and compared with other cases in the literature./p/abstract_text
