Loral Space Communications— its much vaunted satellite-telephone service faltering badly—is not teetering on the brink. Nor is the company about to fall into the arms of another company. Those are the messages management is trying to convey publicly, although some industry analysts are skeptical and believe Loral is looking for a partner with whom it can form a strategic alliance or possibly merge. The slow subscriber ramp-up of Globalstar Telecommunications LP has been a drag on Loral's stock price, which has plummeted by more than 75 within the last 12 months. Last Wednesday, shares advanced 11, to close at 6.31. Loral is Globalstar's managing partner and largest stakeholder (40).
