By the year 2005, eight of the world's leading elevator companies had built establishments in China, a market maintaining an annual growth rate of 30 for four sequential years, constituting 40 of the world's total, according to Giancarlo Besana. Although competition in the market is cut-throat, a number of Chinese elevator brands have survived, developed and succeeded. Suzhou, the renowned city in southern Jiangsu Province, has cradled a number of these national elevator manufacturers since the early 1990s. Changes have been taking place since the turn of the millennium. In the early winter of 2005, your reporter paid a visit to one of these elevator manufacturers, Suzhou Jiangnan Jiajie Elevator Co. Ltd. (SJEC), previously the Suzhou jiangnan Elevator Factory.
