Hardy rubber tree (Eucommia ulmoides), which is called Duzhong in Chinese, is today an endemic species in China and widely used in traditional herbal medicine to treat liver, kidney and spleen problems. A recent study by a group headed by Li Chengsen (Cheng-Sen Li) and Wang Yufei of the CAS Institute of Botany has found the tree could also be a biothermometer for the reconstruction of paleoenvironments.
