Stamping-line productivity can unwind when metalformers choose and use the wrong equipment. Here are some rules for selecting reels, cradles and other coil-handling components The heart and soul of any coil-fed stamping line is the press-its performance specifications set the tone for the rest of the line. The feed unit is critical, too, where accuracy and speed must match press cycles and die tolerances. The straightener device, if required, helps determine part quality and extends tool life. Even off-loading, whether manual or automatic, keeps production consistent and assists in minimizing mishits, double hits and tool damage. Then, add any old decoiling device and the line is set to go, right? Not so fast. It's a true and all too familiar story. XYZ Inc. decided to modernize its stamping operations and add a second plant. It purchased new equipment for the facility upgrade, and reorganized its existing press lines. After the restructuring, XYZ was left with a single press line without a coil-handling device, and one existing coil cradle in reserve. XYZ management congratulated itself on its clever reorganization and promptly mated the remaining coil cradle to its final press line.
