Delirium tremens (DT), which claims approximately 9000 lives annually in the United States, presents unique treatment challenges. The dangers associated with acute alcohol withdrawal are often underestimated, and DT is often not treated with the proper aggressiveness. This article guides the primary care PA in the management of DT, including the proper use of benzodiazepines, and underscores the need for expectant management of concomitant medical and psychiatric conditions.
