"One should take away the fear, but not the respect for magnesium" - this was the quintessence of the seminar of the International Magnesium Association (IMA) on safety in handling magnesium. The event, the third if its kind since 1995, was well attended with 56 participants. According to Kurt Harbodt (IMA Europe), this can be seen as an indication of the ever- increasing importance of the light metal. Production and research activities are currently to be observed at almost all levels. The participants accordingly came not only from foundries, but also from magnesium processing firms and research institutes. The event, which was organized by an IMA working group under the leadership of Gunther Eberhard (from Roll AG, Zurich), was divided into three parts. First of all, basic aspects of safety in handling magnesium were presented in the form of lectures. Proceeding from that, participants were able, in three discussion forums, to clarify special questions on handling magnesium. A concluding experimental talk made impressively clear the dangers that exist when basic elementary rules for handling magnesium are ignored.
