An oil spill containment system has passed its first test in the US. Any single hull tanker trading to the United States is now at least ten years old. The owners of such single-hull tankers (those over 5,000 dwt and with segregated ballast tanks) have as much as 14 years (until 2015) during which they can continue to trade them to the US. That is another 14 years during which they can operate pretty much as built.
