When a clutch-brake outlives its usefulness due to wear, productivity suffers and safety can be compromised. Repair can be a problem because many job-shop presses are decades old, and components designed for them often are hard to find or unavailable. Dyna-Fab Corp., a West Lebanon, IN job shop specializing in stamping, fabrication and machining, faced such a situation. "We had concerns not with productivity but with safety," says John Rew, Dyna-Fab president. "Our press had clutch-brake lining-wear issues, which slowed the speed at which it stopped, and stopped it at different angles."
