Railway Technical Research Institute (RTRI) is an independent foundation established on 10 December 1987 to take over the 100-year R D activities of the in-house research institute of the Japanese National Railway (JNR), when the JNR was privatized and divided into the Japan Railway Group Companies.RTRI has been promoting active and innovative R D, from fundamental to application, in the wide range of fields including rolling stock, track, civil and electrical engineering, information technology, and material, environmental and human sciences. The main financial support for RTRI is given by JR Companies and most of the research projects are dedicated to them. RTRI also conducts collaborative research with universities, contract research projects for industries, and technical advisory services for more than 100 private railway operators which are the supporting members to the institute.
