AbstractA mixture of chlorpyrifos and lindane effective for the control of the seed corn maggot (Hylemya platura) was assessed for possible side‐effects on theBradyrhizobium japonicum–soybean symbiosis. The mixture did not show any detrimental effect onB. japonicumsurvival in liquid inoculant for 24 hours at concentrations up to 96 mg litre−1chlorpyrifos and 38·4 mg litre−1lindane. In greenhouse conditions, early nodulation was not impaired at soil concentrations of 6 mg kg−1of chlorpyrifos and 2·4 mg kg−1of lindane. Nodulations and yields were not affected in five field experiments, at 1 and 2 times the normal rate of commercial formulations.
