摘要

Several studies have highlighted a gap in the distribution of the Lesser Horseshoe Bat in Ireland between colonies in Limerick and north Kerry. This gap may be a barrier to the movement of horseshoe bats along a north-south axis and is thought to have arisen due to habitat fragmentation and or loss of roosting sites. In this study we used roost records of the species and a resistance surface based on expert opinion to identify areas of potential connectivity in the Limerick and north Kerry area with the software Universal Corridor Network Simulator (UNICOR). A potential pathway to link the largest maternity roost in Limerick with two maternity roosts in north Kerry was identified to the west of the Stacks and Mullagharirk Mountain Ranges. When all roost locations were used multiple potential corridors were identified that followed lowland habitats through the two mountain ranges, and also a single route to the east of these. Information on where to focus future conservation actions, which would enable the species to recolonise this area, is essential to prevent future range decline. This study shows that landscape connectivity modelling has a role to play in conserving this species.
