The term "irrigation efficiency" is multi-faceted containing several highly inter-dependent factors. Farmers in the Okanogan Valley have irrigated on the basis of zero-risk to crops. This may be economically efficient, but is highly inefficient insofar as water and land use are concerned.Research conducted at Summerland, B.C., which is attempting to discover the best mix of the various efficiency factors, is described. The results seem to indicate that, with a larger capital outlay for equipment, it is possible to reduce water consumption and soil depletion or fertilizer consumption.
