The Vereiningung DEUTSCHER Schmelzhutten (German Smelters Association, VDS) has changed its name to the Verband der Aluminium recycling Industry (Aluminium Recycling Industry Association, VAR). This step, which above all reflects an extension of the Association's field of activity, is intended to take account of the far-reaching changes in the field of aluminium recycling.In recent years aluminium recycling has become considerably more important. For a long time the aluminium recycling industry has operated more n the background despite its great economic importance. The last link n the recycling chain was formed only by producers of aluminium casting alloys and aluminium for deoxidation (refiners). Until now, only those companies could be members of the VDS. Secondary raw materials, namely old scrap, scrap produced during the production and processing of aluminium, were mainly used as raw materials for casting alloy production. In contrast, the only scrap used as raw material for wrought alloy production was in any event company-internal cycled material without any contamination at all.
