Since the initial assignment of more than a minimal number of anesthesia personnel to the delivery suite, obstetric anesthesia at Yale- New Haven Hospital has evolved in a fashion that has proven to be both intellectually stimulating and financially rewarding. Routine clinical coverage was not permitted to become onerous, and anesthesiology residents, assigned for teaching purposes, were not exploited. Patient- and obstetrician-acceptance of attending anesthesiologists in the delivery suite 24 hours daily has been enthusiastic.
