Data from the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board indicate that the same percentage of helicopters were involved in midair collisions during the 1990s as were airplanes, and that vigilance in the cockpit remains the first defense against colliding with another aircraft. According to a report by the Flight Safety Foundation (FSF), of the 1,972 helicopters registered in the U.S. that were involved in accidents during 1990-99, 27 (1.4) were involved in midair collisions. By comparison, during the same period 20,409 airplanes in the U.S. were involved in accidents. Of these, 290 (1.4) experienced a midair collision.
