A number of microorganisms were isolated from sewage. Biochemiclaoxygen demand (BOD) analysis was carried out by using these isolatedmicroorganisms as a seed material with glucose-glutamic acid (GGA) asa reference standard. Based on the BOD values, a defined microbialcomposition was formulated by using these isolates. This formulatedmicrobial composition was standardized for reproducible BODestimation by using four synthetic and four industrial samples. Theresults showed reproducibility of the BOD values within an acceptablelimit. The BOD results are comparable with sewage which is used as aseed material in conventional BOD analysis. Storage stability studiesof formulated microbial composition t different temperatures showedthe maximum stability at 4degC. Such microbial composition offersbetter opportunity to be used as a standard seed inoculum in the BODtest.
