An intelligent algorithm capable of recognising AM, FM, SSB and continuous wave (CW) signals has been recently described. Such an algorithm is necessary in intelligent receivers that can detect unknown signals without any user intervention. A novel technique of identifying the upper sideband and lower sideband cases of SSB is presented here. This separation algorithm is computationally simple and is particularly suitable for speech modulating signals due to their typical spectral shape. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of this separation technique, and it is found that successful separation can be achieved even for very low SNR values.
