Forecasters at COLORADO STATE UNIVERSITY on April 4predicted a below-average 2012 Atlantic hurricane season with10 named storms, of which four will become hurricanes andtwo will develop into major hurricanes of Category 3 or above.The prediction was based on a cooling of waters in the tropicalAtlantic Ocean and the potential development of El Ni?o conditionsin the equatorial Pacific Ocean. The CSU team predictedthat tropical cyclone activity in 2012 will be about 75 of theaverage season, down from 145 in 2011. In addition, the teampredicted a 42 chance that at least one major hurricane willmake US landfall this year, down from a long-term average of52.
