The article describes recent developments in the construction of fast patrol and transportation vessels for the US military by Bollinger/Incat Inc., applying the latest higher strength varieties of the 5083 aluminium marine alloy. The section on weldability addresses the open-end questions that surround these very new alloys. The creation of this article was promoted by current activities within the United States military, the extraordinary developments in aluminium shipbuilding that have been taking place in Australia, and the creation of new high strength aluminium alloys, primarily in Europe, for the shipbuilding industry.
