Anaesthetists increasingly need to be aware of the medicolegal aspects of their work and of their ethical responsibilities to their patients with respect to consent, 'do not resuscitate' orders and withdrawing or withholding life-sustaining treatment, as well as to their research subjects and their colleagues (including co-authors, co-researchers and those who may be impaired); recent literature in this area is reviewed.
