Extrusion plants are nowadays looking closely at their individual working steps to spot possibilities for rationalisation. In this it is not just the main processes such as extrusion heat treatment, packaging, etc., that are important, but also and to an increasing extent the peripheral processes. Most of all, the working steps related to the extrusion die are being assessed more and more critically. The company Reisch Maschinenbau located in Frastanz, Austria, which specialises in equipment for extrusion plants, has designed and built an automated die handling system for a leading Austrian and European extrusion plant (which operates with a total of more than 20,000 dies). The equipment has been used success-fully for about two years. The core component of this die preparation system consists of two specially designed units: to reduce the time taken to etch a dismantled die, the use of an extrusion discard shear is recommended. This greatly reduces the time between dismantling the die and its readiness for re-use. The features of the device are specially adapted to the task in hand.
