Teaching for clinical competence is a major challenge for nurse educators. Today's nurses must be prepared to make clinical judgments, solve highly complex problems, and think critically. This article focuses on the attributes of competencies and the planning of educational experiences that will enable students to gain competency in clinical practice. Two teaching methods, laboratory simulations and games, are discussed. Each may be used more extensively in nursing education as a major strategy for facilitating the development of clinical competence.
