By August 31 the 83 public textile companies had announced their 2003 half-yearly performance, including garment companies, chemical fibre plants and others listed on the Chinese Stock Exchange. The combined income of these 83 companies totalled 39,139m Yuan and combined gross profits 6,003m Yuan, up 19.8 and 5.9. Combined net profits totalled 1,802m Yuan, down 4.9. Loss-making companies increased to 9 out of the 83, including the Tienshan Cotton Mill and China Garment Corp. The losses totalled 198m Yuan, up by 50m Yuan over the same period of 2002. The reasons for reduced profits in these public companies included lower profits from sales and losses on investments.
