Although, for centuries, human infections by Tunga pene-trans L. 1758 have often been reported from Africa and Latin America, there are no records of other species of Tunga from many different parts of the world infecting human beings. During a survey in Ecuador to collect specimens of Tunga trimamillata, a flea recently described from swine, goats and cattle (Pampiglione et al, 2002; 2003), we came across two cases of human infection due to this new species One of the patients is a 40-year-old, mentally retarded man living in Santa Isabel district, Azuay province, in the Southern Ecuador He is very poor and walks with bare feet We observed a lesion referable to Tunga on the big toe of his left foot (Fig 1). We made a small hole with a sterile lancet and pulled out the flea (Fig 2).
