Service providers systematically evaluate the complete cost of owning and operating a network to determine the financial impact of technology on their bottom line. As companies begin to address today's environmental challenges, this adds a new dimension of environmental responsibility to the list of decision making criteria the service provider must consider. A comprehensive decision making tool that encompasses both monetary cost and ecological impact will enable the service provider to make fiscally and environmentally sound choices. In this paper, the authors consider the environmental impact of network operations using an approach similar to one typically used to evaluate cost. The full breadth of network operations I. Considered, including the technology, processes, and organization required to run a network. A module that can be used to calculate the carbon footprint associated with operating a network is proposed and described in parametric terms. The interdependences of operational choices and techniques for reducing the environmental impact of operations are also discussed.
