In the new GranTurismo, Maserati at last has a world-class coupe. But can it beat its rivals from Porsche, Jaguar and Mercedes at what they do best? God, I have believed for some time, is Italian. Think of the country, the architecture, the wine, food, cars, clothes, women and climate and you may see what I mean. But Italy's most beautiful possession is, in fact, its language, as I shall now prove. In 1950 the inaugural Formula One World Championship was won by the fabulous-sounding Dottore Giuseppe Farina, whose name translates with total precision into English as Dr Joe Flour.
