A Number 1 fuel heating oil was studied for the organo-nitrogencontent. The organo-nitrogen compounds were isolated by mild acidextraction followed by silical gel adsorption. Three extracts werestudied - a basic nitrogen extract in methylene chloride, a nonbasicnitrogen extract in methyl alcohol and a nonbasic nitrogen extract inmethylene chloride. The major constituents of each extract wereidentified by GC/MS. There were seven major classes of nitrogencompounds detected in each extract. There compounds includedalkyl-substituted carbazoles, indoles, pyrazines, pyridines,pyrroles, quinolines and tetrahydroquinolines. The nitrogen contentand distribution was compared to both tar-sands and shale derivedfuels.
