Additives can accelerate the process and sensors can monitor temperature and oxygen, but the nose is the most basic tool of composting. Composting is a basic process of nature and occurs continually wherever organic material is in a state of decomposition. Compost managers can use special materials to enhance operation and tools to monitor activity in order to produce compost more efficiently and in a shorter period of time. Materials that enhance composting operations usually are referred to as additives or accelerators, depending on the benefit derived. Monitoring tools are used to keep tabs on the atmosphere within the compost pile.
