Scattered like pebbles over an area of the Pacific Ocean as large as the continental USA, Micronesia encompass several tiny island nations. Among them are the Marianas, which form the northwestern-most extension of this South Seas paradise. Whereas the largest and southernmost island of the Marianas is Guam Guahan, the northern islands of Rota Luta, Saipan, and Tinian, as well as a number of smaller and uninhabited atolls, belong to the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI), or Sankattan Siha Na Mas Marianas. Guam has the status of an unincorporated US territory, while the CNMI is a commonwealth in political union with the USA.
