Designed to prevent metal oxidation and surface carbon loss during carbonitriding, bright annealing and carburising, a system for very fine control of carbon dioxide concentrations in heat treatment atmospheres has recently been introduced by the UK-based Analytical Development Company. The system constantly keeps the carbon dioxide concentrations in furnace or generator atmospheres within a maximum limit of 1 percent of volume. By controlling the volumes of fuel gas and air entering the furnace, it optimises the atmosphere for endothermic reactions, which prevents sooting of the treated materials and ensures the metals have a clean, bright and consistent finish.
