ESAB has developed the Rosio~(TM) 3D welding system for Friction Stir Welding, It is suitable for welding soft aluminium alloys in thicknesses up to 5 mm with good repeatability and quality. Substantial research has been carried out since 2003 in order to be in position to utilise a standard industrial robot for this demanding process. Modifications in mechanics and complex control algorithms have enabled development that makes robotic friction stir welding a viable process for the manufacturing industry.
