An official of the Taiwan Textile Re-search Institute has warned the island's textile manufacturers that they must diversify their product lists if they hope to remain profitable following the abolition of the quota system in 2005. Once the quotas have been lifted, he said, Taiwan's garment makers will not be able to compete effectively against competitors in Mainland China because of the much lower labour costs on the Mainland. With clothing accounting for as much as 80 of Taiwan's textile products, the industry will be hard hit if it fails to diversify in time, he said. TTRI is recommending that textile makers move into the production of textiles for applications such as health care, medical treatment and security monitoring. To assist in the transformation TTRI will conduct a series of seminars and exhibitions to display the organisation's advanced research results and new products. TTRI will also make available total solution packages for domestic companies and will assist in arranging financial subsidies from the Ministry of Economic Affairs.
