Outokumpu Technology, Finland have announced their first large orders from China since the acquisition of two European companies which have contributed to the creation of a new international source of aluminium technology. As Seppo Rantakari, Senior Vice-President for Aluminium Technology at Outokumpu Technology, explains: "Our expertise in the aluminium field now comprises Aisco Systems of Canada, suppliers of the rodding room process for producing the electrode assemblies used in aluminium smelting and KHD Aluminium Technology, suppliers of both rodding room equipment and paste plants for the production of carbon anodes. In September 2001, the acquisition of Lurgi Metallurgie added alumina calcining to our portfolios as well as extensive experience in lump-sum turnkey projects. As the market leader in alumina calcination, Lurgi Metallurgie also makes us a significant supplier to alumina plants. Outokumpu is now set to make major advances in the aluminium technology business," Rantakari continues. "We have a long-term commitment to metals-related technologies. Outokumpu Aluminium Technology can now offer a full range of services to our customers in the aluminium industry." The company will shortly deliver technology to China's new aluminium smelter. Two Outokumpu companies have signed contracts with the state-owned Yichuan Power Corporation in Henan Province, which has recently started construction of a 200,000 tpy aluminium smelter scheduled to produce its first metal by the fourth quarter of 2002.
