WHEN I started out, I often flew with old-timer Captains who did things their way regardless of what the company or their co-Pilots thought. I recall landing in Hartford, Connecticut, one night with a load of ice on our wings. I asked the Captain whether he wanted me to call for de-icing. He replied, "It got us in here; it'll get us out." He meant, "No". I would ask this same Captain whether it would be OK if I turned on the radar when it was clear there were thunderstorms ahead. He would reply, "If it makes you happy." When reading a checklist, some Captains would say, "You can read it if you want." Clearly, they didn't care, just so long as I didn't speak too loudly and disturb them. For these guys, it was checklist, shmecklist... whatever.
