After a brief statement of the non-physical methods of investigation, the physical methods are reviewed. These are divided into two groups-those which introduce energy into the uterus, which include radiography, radioisotope techniques and ultrasonic techniques, and those which do not introduce energy. In the latter group, phonocardiography, foetal ECG, foetal heart rate, ballistocardiography, measurement of uterine activity, foetal EEG and thermography are included. Hazards involved are mentioned.
