If children contribute to the household by using their time tocollect natural resources from common property sources-such ascollecting firewood, fetching water, collecting fodder, grazinganimals-then local depletion of these resources could poten- tiallyincrease the demand for children. This feedback could create adynamically unstable 'vicious circle' between population growth andresource depletion. We empiri- cally examine several elements of sucha 'vicious circle' hypothesis using data from Pakistan with unusuallyrich detail on both child time use and firewood collection activi- Ties.
