摘要

A wide variety of vegetables can be successfully grown by using mulches. Cucumbers, capsicums, melons, tomatoes, cole crops and okra have shown significant increase in earliness, yield and quality. In addition to soil and water conservation, improvedyield and quality, suppression of weed growth, mulches can improve the fertilizer use efficiency and also used as reflective mulches like yellow plastic to minimize the incidence of viral diseases and deter the approach to some species of pests. The advantages of using plastic mulches for the production of high value vegetable crops have been recognized since the late 1950s. There are three primary non-degradable types of mulches used commercially in the production of vegetable crops viz., black, clearand white (or white on-black). Black plastic is the most popular, because it retards weed growth and warms the soil up to some extent in the winter season.
