During the mid to late nineteenth century it became fashionable for rural and farm families to carpet their homes with warp-faced rugs. While oriental rugs seemed to be the choice of affluent city folks, it was "Venetian carpets," or "rainbow rugs" as my family called them, that softened the hardwood flooring of my country ancestors.
